Aiko Wakao Austin is an interdisciplinary artist whose multicultural upbringing informs her exploration of identity, family and cultural memory. Born in Tokyo and raised in Italy, she received a B.A. in International Relations from Brown University. After graduation, she worked in Japan as a journalist for Bloomberg and Reuters, and later in finance at Goldman Sachs.
Austin moved to New York in 2016 and began photographing professionally. Her work has been featured in numerous publications and in public art exhibitions such as Photoville and the Griffin Museum. Her latest project, “what we inherit,” has been recognized internationally, including Top 10 Winner of LensCulture Critics’ Choice, Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 50 and FRESH KLOMPCHING Edition. She is an Up Next Member with Diversify Photo.
She currently lives and works in New York.
